O'Neil, who was in her high-school times when she took part in the auditions, tried out for Canadian Idol's 3rd season during the first months of 2005. The judges loved her voice and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil was never in the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performances. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil would be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest in show history, following the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian the prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
