O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Prior to making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady's first job was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She was the star of her big screen debut in the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring character on ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred as a guest on independent films and television shows. Donna Abandando, her first important role on the ABC detective drama NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the squad between 1993 and the year 1996. The actress was nominated in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama series each year. Along with her ensemble, she received the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Best Performance of the Ensemble of a Drama Series.
